Truth and fiction. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky said that he put his innermost feelings, indeed his entire soul, into the Sixth Symphony, the Pathétique. It is the most sincere of all his works. But he did not want to reveal the programme of his last symphony in its entirety. The music builds an arc from initial confidence and zest for action to high-spiritedness and then down to total resignation. In contrast to this, chief conductor Markus Poschner has programmed two lyrical concert pieces with an exceptionally musical violinist. Julia Fischer plays the passionate fantasy of the violinist and composer Josef Suk, who is still to be discovered in this country. Ottorino Respighi was also a violinist and composer. His Poema autunnale takes you on a journey through a soundscape full of autumnal joie de vivre and mysterious foggy moods.
