Virtuosity in perfection

Tragic hero meets fairytale princess. Dmitri Shostakovich's haunting film music for Hamlet gives a stage to the suffering of Shakespeare's Danish prince at the world: pitch black and with deceptive glimmers of hope. In Sergei Prokofiev's suite to the ballet Cinderella, on the other hand, the music literally rises from the ashes to a dreamlike happy ending. Two contrasting and highly narrative works, perfect for the Chinese conductor Elim Chan. She has received worldwide praise for her inspiring conducting style and sense of timbre. Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja returns to Basel with a special piece: the new violin concerto Tacet by Stefano Gervasoni. Tacet is the Latin command to remain silent. This concerto explores the boundaries of music and, in doing so, delves into the fascinating relationship between silence and sound.
